An ultra-compact that is ultra-capable is the goal of Sony’s latest point-and-shoot camera, the Cyber-shot DSC-HX99. Packed into its pocketable build is a 24-720mm equivalent zoom, so you can make sure you get the shot, regardless of the situation. Of course, image quality is top notch with an 18.2MP 1/2.3″ Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and the BIONZ X processor, including the ability to record UHD 4K video. And, fitting for an everyday camera, the HX99 offers users a 180º tilting touchscreen and a pop-up 638.4k-dot OLED EVF.

This camera is meant for travel. Its compact size and Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* 30x optical zoom lens make it useful for practically any shooting situation, whether that means a vast landscape or a distant subject. The camera also has Fast Intelligent AF and Eye AF for locking onto subjects, as well as 10 fps continuous shooting. For improved sharpness, the lens has Optical SteadyShot image stabilization to help limit the effects of camera shake.

Shooters looking to squeeze even greater performance out of their imaging system will benefit from the HX99’s control ring, providing direct access to certain manual controls. The rear LCD touchscreen provides another control element with Touch Pad AF and Touch Focus/Shutter choices. Raw is also available alongside JPEG for maximizing the image’s potential in post. Tack on UHD 4K30 video using XAVC S, as first for the HX series, and you have a powerful camera in a pocketable form factor.
